Farm Project: Wrap-up

Posted by | Blog, Farm Project, Photography | No Comments

It’s hard to believe, but our year-long farm photography project is done! I’m so glad that Elaine and I decided to start it in the first place, that our family got excited about it too, and that we stuck with it to the end. In 2013, we’ll be starting phase two which is to choose the photos that best represent our family’s farm life over the generations (all the way back to the early 1900′s). Those photos will be going into a book that we’ll be designing as a family keepsake. My sister and I are also planning a gallery show in August (more news on that later!).

Blog: Farm Project, Dec-1

I don’t have a lot of farm-related photos from December because my sister and I didn’t head out until our annual family gathering for Christmas. Mom did send me a couple of photos to show the progress on the scale shed that Warren has been building on his yard. When it is done, it will be large enough to park both the semi and grain trailer inside it. On days when it isn’t too cold or windy to safely work, Warren and Dad have been framing in the walls and rafters.

Blog: Farm Project-Nov1

Last weekend, my sister and I drove out to the country for November’s installment of our farm project. We had intended on coming back to the city Saturday night or Sunday morning, but due to the first big snowstorm of 2012, we got stuck on Mom and Dad’s yard until Monday morning. It was a lot of fun though… Dad made us popcorn, Mom cooked delicious meals, I had mid-day naps, and we played several games of bien (a Belgian card game that I love). Our main focus for the weekend though was attending Saturday’s cattle sale, in which my brother Gordie had six bred heifers up for auction.

Blog: Farm Project – October

I had to make an unexpected trip out home today for a funeral. It was for the mom of an elementary school friend of mine who I hadn’t seen in quite a few years. But I wanted to be there. It’s on days like these that I’m reminded how amazing small, hometown communities can be. There were so many people there, the church and hall packed, volunteers singing at the service, bringing baking and making/serving the lunch, etc. She was obviously a pretty special woman.

Blog: Farm Project - Sep1

September is a very busy month on the farm. Between finishing up harvest, hauling bales, making silage, harrowing fields, selling cattle, cleaning pens, starting on fall projects, getting the kids back to school and bringing in vegetables from the garden, there was quite a bit to capture on camera! Elaine and I are only able to go out for the occasional weekend, so we would have missed a lot. Thankfully, our family chipped in by taking photos when we couldn’t be there. As a result, this blog post is going to be filled to the brim with farm imagery.

Farm Project: the family

Meet the family behind our farm project! From left to right, Dad, Mom, Gordon, Warren, Nicole and their three kids, Ian, Erin and Dion. Three generations (the generation before has passed on). I am continually grateful that my two brothers chose farming as their livelihood, and that Warren found his wonderful wife Nicole to share life on the farm with him.
